For every year, lacs of students appear for government recruitment examinations which are being organised by the respective authorities like UPSC, SSC, RRB, IBPS, State PSCs, Police, Defence, & many others government departments. Cracking the written test is the very first step of recruitment. Once the Sarkari Result is announced then there are many steps like merit list, cut off, DV, medical examination and final appointment which every candidate needs to undergo successfully in order to get the job. The process of selection itself is something that is going to be absolutely essential for every hopeful candidate otherwise, chances are they will make mistakes.

Step 1: Sarkari Result Declaration

The Sarkari Result is firstly published by the recruitment authority on its official website. The release of the result can happen in various forms, according to the method of recruitment:

  • The candidates who have qualified as per their roll numbers
  • Result list as per name of candidates
  • Scorecard or marks obtained
  • Candidates selected as per their categories
  • Stage-wise result (Preliminary, Main, Skill test, Interview)

Candidates need to save a copy of the result pdf for future references. Moreover, the candidate also needs to verify the information with the details mentioned like roll number, registration number, candidate category, qualifying status etc.

Step 2: Understanding the Merit List

Merit list means the list of the candidates selected who are qualified for the second round of selection according to their scores.

Generally, there are two kinds of merit lists:

Provisional Merit List

The provisional merit list is declared after the written test or the intermediate stages of the selection process and is conditional on document verification and eligibility check.

Final Merit List

The final merit list is made after completion of all phases of recruitment which include:

  • Written examination
  • Skill Test (if applicable)
  • Physical Test (for police and defence jobs)
  • Interview (where applicable)
  • Document Verification
  • Medical Examination

The inclusion in the final merit list makes the candidate eligible for appointment to the available vacancy.

Step 3: What is the Cut-Off?

Cut-off The cut-off is defined as the lowest score a candidate needs to be shortlisted for the selection process/further process. Every recruiting organization under the government has provided cut-off marks in the following categories:

  • General (UR)
  • OBC
  • EWS
  • SC
  • ST
  • PwBD (if any)
  • Ex-Servicemen (if any)

There is an annual change in the cut-off because there are many factors which determine it:

  • Vacancies available
  • Application received
  • Difficulty level of the test
  • Performance of the candidate
  • Reservation scheme
  • Normalization process (in case of conducting examination in different shifts)

It is necessary to meet the cut-off mark to improve your chances of selection.

Step 4: Scorecard and Marks

Individual score cards are made available by many recruiting boards after the Sarkari Result.

Some common elements of a score card are:

  • Name of the candidate
  • Roll number
  • Registration number
  • Marks in each subject
  • Total marks
  • Normalized marks (if any)
  • Whether or not selected
  • Category

It is important for candidates to check their marks against the cutoff marks.

Step 5: Document Verification (DV)

Document Verification is the most crucial step post qualification of the exam. DV helps determine if the candidate satisfies all the eligibility criteria listed out in the recruitment advertisement.

Some common documents asked for are:

  • Class 10 Certificate (proof of Date of Birth)
  • Class 12 Mark Sheet
  • Educational certificates in Graduation/Post Graduation/Higher Education
  • Category Certificate (SC/ST/OBC/EWS)
  • Income Certificate (when applicable)
  • Domicile Certificate
  • Identity Proof considers AADHAR/PAN/Voter ID/Passport, etc.
  • Passport sized Photographs
  • Print Out of the Application Form
  • Admit Cards
  • No Objection Certificate (In case you are employed by the Government)
  • Experience Certificate (If needed)

Both originals and copies of these documents have to be carried by candidates.

Step 6: Medical Examination

There are many government jobs where a medical fitness test is taken by the applicants after document verification.

Some of the medical tests conducted are:

  • Railway recruitment
  • Defence recruitment
  • Police recruitment
  • CAPF
  • State Police
  • Fire Services
  • Some PSU recruitment

The medical test includes the following points:

  • Vision test
  • Hearing test
  • Physical fitness test
  • Height & Weight
  • Blood pressure
  • General health condition

Those who pass the medical test move onto the next stage.

Step 7: Waiting List or Reserve List

A number of recruitment agencies even make use of the waiting list (reserve list).

Applicants from the reserve list can be appointed if:

  • Selected applicants do not take up the job offer.
  • There are still some vacant positions left.
  • More positions are authorized.
  • The document verification of the selected applicants fails.

Hence, reserve list applicants must keep track of all notices released until the entire recruitment procedure gets officially terminated.

Step 8: Final Selection List

Once all stages are completed, the recruiting agency publishes the selection list.

The list usually contains the following information:

  • Roll No. of candidate
  • Name of candidate
  • Category
  • Post allotted
  • Department
  • State/Zonal Allotment (if any)

Candidates who figure in the list alone are eligible for appointment.

Step 9: Appointment Letter

The appointment letter is issued by the concerned department once the entire process of recruitment is completed successfully.

The appointment letter includes the following details:

  • Post name
  • Department
  • Posting place
  • Date of reporting
  • Instructions for joining
  • Salary slab
  • Probation period
  • List of documents required on joining

It is advised to read all instructions carefully before reporting.

Step 10: Joining and Probation

Once the candidates reach their respective department, they are made to undertake various formalities such as:

  • Verification of identity
  • Issue of service book
  • Verification by police (as applicable)
  • Supplying medical records
  • Verification of bank accounts
  • Enrollment into Pension/NPS/UPS Scheme (as applicable)

It should be noted that most government departments put the newly recruited employees under a probation period.

Common Mistakes Candidates Should Avoid

Candidates miss out on the selection process through some avoidable mistakes after results are announced. These include:

  • Ignoring official information.
  • Non-attendance for document verification.
  • Bringing wrong/incomplete documents.
  • Using expired category certificates.
  • Failing to check physical requirements.
  • Failure to attend by the joining date.
  • Dependence on unofficial websites/social media sites.

Conclusion

The Sarkari Result is only the first step in the actual recruitment process. It is important for selection in a govt. Job that the candidate performs well not only in the exam but also gets the place in merit list, crosses the cut off mark set by the govt., passes the document verification process, medical fitness tests (if it is in the process of selection), and joins the service after getting appointment letter on the designated day.
